Snowmance (2017, dir. Douglas Mitchell)

This film is the height of escapism- not because Sarah’s “dream man” snowman comes to life, but because in the world of Snowmance, print media is alive and well to the extent that you can make a good living off regional journalism! Penniless artists live in beautiful modern-build flats, without five flatmates! If I describe my perfect house, can the magical snow of Minneapolis bring that to life too?

Sarah is a romantic, kissing snow effigies of boys she liked since she was twelve. Thankfully her friend Nick has always been on hand to stop her getting bullied and look, the writing’s in the snow here. You don’t need me to tell you these too will end up together.

Look, he’s even considering a flattering selfie angle for her. It’s a foregone conclusion.

Nick is as painfully obvious as this endgame relationship, so picture his sulking when Sarah’s snowman beau becomes a real man. I gotta hand it to him, Cole the snowman (I know, ho ho ho indeed) is a breath of fresh air. He’s so delightfully inconsistent- afraid to eat carrots but happy to indulge in a snowball fight? (Cf. gingerbread people living in a gingerbread house. What is going on there exactly.) It’s implied Cole has always been a fully grown man since Sarah conjured him up while she was at school- unsettling!

He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of winter (this checks out) but also says stuff like, “sometimes I feel like my head’s full of snow” (not a phrase, never a phrase). There’s so much to unpack!

Sarah on the other hand feels like her head is full of brain.

Nick has to draw this blossoming romance, by the way, because Sarah’s love life is now the main feature in the magazine’s December issue (an idea conceived of on the 14th December, this really is a fantasyland).

I had fun here. Cole and his magical origins are enough to buoy up an otherwise dull flick, and luckily scenes without him are propped up by Sarah’s dad and her co-worker who is an obvious rip off of most Melissa McCarthy roles.

Rating: HoHo/HoHoHo
